AP15 - Dance performance 29 APRIL 2017

  • Published in News
The duo Wang Ramirez debuted together with AP15, whose virtuosic technique and artistry earned them the opportunity to develop and present their work in the international dance scene. The powerful artistic force of this piece paves the way for Wang and Ramirez’s own choreographic vocabulary and aesthetic ideas. This creation has been recognized for its outstanding quality by numerous prices such as the New York Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance in 2013.

AP15 is 15 minutes of pure dance. No need for scenography here. A man and a woman mirror each other in a nervous and feverish pas de deux. As with a couple dancing the tango, the duo explores a symbiotic relationship, in the face of difference, where each dancer manipulates the desired “other”. Between the soul and flesh, between Cupid (Amor) and Psyche, they proceed like in a game of chess. This piece fights like a martial arts duo in a universe of sound signed by Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

“It is so laden with sudden effects — whiplash movements and lighting that transforms each dancer from a silhouette into a three-dimensional person — that it stays tense.”
The New York Times
“This duo married immaculate technique with an acute understanding of spatial tension.
” The Times “
[Sébastien Ramirez and Honji
Wang] came close to doing the unthinkable: melding influences from contemporary dance and ballet with (...) hip-hop in a duet, AP15, that hinted at the yin- yang duality and tensions that character our spiritual and physical selves”

AVDP Team for the 9th edition of AVDP-International Dance Film Festival hosts norm-breaking female icons, who promote dance film choreographic creation as a tool for social transformation. The 23 international films of the special screening event WOMEN IN ACTION, of which 20 are Greek Premieres, focus on the present and the future.  Despite the fact that the film industry is mainly occupied by males, in the videodance spectrum it is exactly the opposite way. In the field of film production, the previously decades-long riotous debates around gender roles and gender equality camps to grant space to female filmmakers, queer voices and transgender artists, who adopt a bold personal perspective to expose greatso-cial issues.
On the other hand, throughout Dance Film History, women have boldly occupied the director’s seat exploring the composition for the camera and interdisciplinary making. From the 1940s when pioneering choreographer - dancer - filmmaker - photographer - poet - film theorist writer and lecturer, Maya Deren led the way of dance film making, to maverick choreographer/ directors of 70’s (like Trisha Brown, Ivone Reiner, Pina Baush), to 90’s (with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Sasha Waltz) and today’s voices...all of them are WOMEN IN ACTION!
